How do I pronounce “Ziimeo”?
Ziim (rhymes with sim) ee (rhymes with see) oh (rhymes with so). Ziim-ee-oh is the correct pronunciation. It's like video with a "ziime". It’s really quite easy!
Is Ziimeo free?
Yes, the Standard Definition version of Ziimeo is a free service for our members. Ziimeo also has a paid version – Ziimeo HD Active. Ziimeo HDActive is offered as an easy monthly membership at $9.95 or annually at $69.95.
What is the Ziimeo Community?
Apart from the media content on Ziimeo one of our best features is our friendly and travel minded community members. Many of our members are what we affectionately call Travel ‘Junkies’ because so much of their lives are involved with travel in some form or another. Whether it is for business or purely pleasure, travel is a large part of their lives and many of them have stories to tell in the form of videos, images, music and even games. Participating in our community is completely optional, but we believe that if you interact with the other members, you'll find the experience to be extremely rewarding.
The best way to get started in our community is to check-out some videos, images, music or games that have already been uploaded to find inspiration to create your own media to upload. Other Ziimeo members will see you're another travel ‘junkie’ or enthusiast just like them. When you watch other media, give some feedback to the creator by leaving a comment or even starting up a dialog. Tell that member what you think, why you like their media, or even what you think may improve it. You can also rate the media and give them a 'Like' to show your appreciation. Also, when watching other media and you come across content that you really like click on the ‘Favorites’ button to store in your Favorites file.
If you see someone's media that you like, add them as a ‘Friend’ and ‘Subscribe’ to their media. Every time that member uploads new media you will be notified to go and check-out their content. That way you will see what their 'Favorites' are on Ziimeo. The more you interact within the community, the more members you will meet.
So long as you maintain a respectful attitude towards other members of our community and explore the creative media our members upload, you will have a very positive and adventurous experience on Ziimeo. So go forth and explore the site, the media, find new friends and have fun with your travels!
If I haven’t made a video before, how do I get started?
You don't need to be a great movie director to make good videos. All you need is a video recording camera, some imagination and a little motivation. But one thing you must have to post a video on Ziimeo is the desire for the enjoyment of Travel. There are all kinds of travel related videos on Ziimeo. All made by travel adventure lovers who have the passion to share their video creations. Many videos will be made with the basic digital point and shoot camera that has SD or HD video. There are the people who make edited videos using a mid-range video cameras. Then, there are the professional video makers who make their videos with expensive high quality equipment and do it as a serious hobby or even as their profession. Whatever kind of video maker you may be, there are always great travel videos on Ziimeo for you to get inspired by.
The same applies to those members who join for the other forms of media we offer – image, music and games. So long as the images, music or games are related to travel or entertainment when we are travelling, then you can use any still camera, or audio recorder or computer to create your masterpiece.
What settings for uploading video and other media do we recommend?
There are just too many options and different types of video software to be able to provide you with all the necessary settings. So what we can do is give you some guidelines for compressing yours videos for Ziimeo. Note: Sometimes these settings are in the "Advanced" or "Options" settings when exporting.
Our supported file formats are: wmv', 'mov', 'mpg', 'avi', 'flv', 'mpeg', 'mp4', '3gp', 'rm', 'asf'
Codec
A codec is the format in which your video will be encoded. Different codecs have different features with varying quality. To achieve the best results, we recommend using H.264 (better known as MP4) for the video codec and AAC (short for Advanced Audio Codec) for the audio codec. If you're using Windows, then WMV3 is a good choice for your video codec.
Data rate
This is a setting that controls both the visual quality of the video and how big the file will be. Most video editors, this is known as kilobits per second (kbits/sec or kbps). It’s recommended you use 2,000 kbits/sec for standard definition 4:3 video, 3,000 kbits/sec for widescreen DV, or 5,000 kbits/sec for high definition uploads.
Deinterlace
If you have this option available, then enable it! If you shoot in DV format, this is extremely important, otherwise you will often get strange-looking horizontal lines in your video.
Frame rate & Keyframes
If you have an option that says "current," it is best to use that. The alternative is 25 fps (frames per second) for Europe and rest of the world and 30 fps for USA, Canada, and Japan. Our maximum framerate is 30fps. If you have an option for keyframes, then use the same value you used for framerate.
Resolution
Standard definition 4:3 video ratio is 640x480, widescreen DV is 853x480, and high definition is 1280x720. We recommend you export 1920x1080 or 1440x1080 video as 1280x720. If you don’t we will automatically scale it down to 1280x720. If you have the option to control the pixel aspect ratio (square pixels) make sure it's set to "1:1" or "1.00", this is not display aspect ratio.
Audio Settings
Choose AAC for the audio codec, set the bit rate to 320 kbps, and the sample rate to 44.100 kHz.
Those are the basic settings that will apply to almost all of the video programs currently available.
Note: Do not use “Apple ProRes” codec’s. It doesn’t work with Ziimeo!
How do I upload a Video, Images, Music and Games?
Login and go to Upload in the header navigation bar of each page. Click the Upload button and it will take you to the “Upload Media” page. Once there, you can upload your video, image, music or games. Please be sure you have read our Terms of Service for the types of videos, images, music and games you can upload. Only your own creations naturally! Then enter the Title, Description, find the Category (that it best fits), the Group and enter the Keywords for the video (this helps the Search Engines find your video), click the “Browse Video File” or post the “Embed Code”. You also have the options of uploading a Thumbnail – Browse or enter the URL. Check the box to agree to our Terms of Service, and the finally click the “Upload” button. Your media will automatically start uploading to our service and will take just a moment depending upon the size of your upload file.
Note: slow connections and large files will take longer so please be patient during this process.
If my upload doesn’t work, what should I do?
Simply try it again! Generally, the best way to fix a problem is to try it again. If you still have a problem after multiple attempts, then try holding down the shift key on your keyboard and click the reload button again on your browser. This method will reset the cache in your browser. If it still doesn’t work, then quit your browser and reload it and try again. You will find that your browser is generally the cause of these problems. You could also try using another browser too.
Why aren’t I getting views of my videos, images, music and games?
There maybe many reasons why your videos, images, music or games aren’t getting viewed, listened to or used by the Ziimeo community. The most likely reason is that no-one knows it’s there! The best way for people to find out about it, is to join a Group of like minded members, or subscribe to other members feeds, “like” their content and join into the conversation within the community. Ziimeo is a vibrant community of intelligent and creative people who are passionate about their travel and their media. We encourage you to find people who share your interests and connect with them at Ziimeo.

What is HD?
HD is “high definition”. High definition is the highest quality video, image, music and games resolution available now. HD video and image picture is clearer, richer, and much more “true to life” than standard TV and videos. It’s the latest technology in picture production and is very much worth the investment to upgrade.
Is it the same as HDTV?
Yes HD is the same as HDTV. HDTV was one of the first major applications of high definition video. The HD signal requires much more data transmission than regular TV. The broadcast TV signal is compressed as digital information and is available in two formats – 720p and 1080i. These format references refer to the number of horizontal lines used to produce the image.
Is the HD used on Ziimeo the same as HDTV?
At Ziimeo we present our HD in the 720p format, which is exactly the same resolution (1280x720) that is used by all the major broadcasting networks like ABC, BBC, FOX, SKY and many other cable & satellite providers.
How can I start watching Ziimeo videos and images in HD right now?
You will need to sign up to our HD Active membership right now to see it for yourself. You will be amazed at how rich are the colours and how clear and crisp are the images. Yes, HD in true 1280x720, up to 30fps in MP4 media format.
Can I upload in HD?
Yes, you can upload in HD at any time, so take advantage of HD. All you need to do is upload a video file that’s 1280x720 resolution or higher. The Ziimeo servers will initially make a standard quality version, then it will convert your video into HD, but you must be a Ziimeo HD Active member to view it.
What encoding settings should I be using for HD?
Yes, it’s a good idea to compress your video down from very high quality to just high quality.
It’s best to use the settings of H.264 codec at size 1280x720, bit rate 3000-5000 kbits/sec (optimized for “download”), key frame every 30 frames (frame reordering on), using whatever frame rate you shot the video in. use AAC at 128kbps in stereo for your sound setting.
Should I de-interlace the video before I upload?
Yes, it's almost always a good idea to de-interlace the video. It’s best to de-interlace and resize to 1280x720 before you upload. In many cases you might be better off de-interlacing before you even start editing.
Why is my video resolution only 640×368?
HD video comes in such a large format that it can’t fit into the width of a regular web page, so it’s shown at half size. To get the full benefits of the HD image, go into full screen mode by clicking the full screen button in the lower right of the player. The native size of Ziimeo’s HD Active files are 1280x720.
What happens if I upload 1920x1080 footage, will it be accepted?
Ziimeo will accept footage of any size and display it as 1280x720 resolution. However for better image quality we recommend resizing your video to 1280x720 before uploading.
Can I watch HD in native 1280x720 with no smoothing?
Yes, click the full screen button in the lower right corner of the player, then click the button left above it 'smoothing off' to toggle smoothing. Your preference will be saved for all HD videos you watch.
Do I need any special software to watch HD?
No, all you need is the current version of the Adobe Flash, which you probably already have. If you're not sure you can check by clicking here: get.adobe.com/?flashplayer/?
Do I need a high speed computer for HD?
If you purchased your computer in the last three or four years and it runs either Mac OS X or Windows, then it should be fast enough to play high quality HD. The fewer the programs you have running at the same time as viewing your HD videos the better. Even closing down unused browsers may assist your computers performance. Our video player is designed to degrade the video quality smoothly if it detects that it’s dropping frames.
Do I need a high speed internet connection for HD videos?
Most residential cable running ADSL2 connections should be more than adequate. If HD seems slow to load, then turn off any background downloads or peer-to-peer sharing applications. You can always push the play button in the player to pause the video to let buffer before viewing.
Will my computer monitor be capable of showing HD?
All modern LCD computer monitors are similar in resolution to HD, if not better. So all Ziimeo HD videos should be enhanced by your computer monitor.
Will Ziimeo HD Active work with my HDTV?
Most definitely! If you can connect your computer to your HDTV (for example, using an inexpensive DVI to HDMI adapter) Ziimeo HD will look even better in full screen. It will be comparable to broadcast digital TV.
Do I need a special camera to upload HD?
Basic point and shoot cameras that can take HD video in 1280x720 resolution are very common and affordable these days. You should check the specifications on your camera for details. Look for HD and 1280x720 as a guide.
Other sites offer HD video and it's free, why should I use Ziimeo HD Active?
Ziimeo HD Active is so much better than other sites, plus we have free membership to the Ziimeo Travel Club.

Yes, there is a 9 GB per file limit for HD Active members, and a 3 GB per file limit for Standard SD members.
We accept the following file types: wmv', 'mov', 'mpg', 'avi', 'flv', 'mpeg', 'mp4', '3gp', 'rm', 'asf'
Please note: There are a million variables in video compression. Sometimes, even though a file type is accepted by the Ziimeo uploader, the Ziimeo conversion process may fail. Take a look at our recommended compression settings to make sure your media plays properly on Ziimeo.
What is compression? Should I compress my videos before uploading them?
Compressing a video reduces the file size. If your file is very large then we highly recommend compressing the size of the file before you upload. It can take time to compress a video file, however it will be faster when it’s uploaded. It will also be a lot faster downloading for anyone you choose to share the file with.
Can I ever access/download the original media file I uploaded?
Yes you can! Go to the media's individual page where you watch and comment on that content. To the left below the media is a ‘Download’ Button. Download the media file from here.
How do I download the source file? All I get is a new window with the video playing.
If you’re having trouble downloading the source file try right-clicking the download link and choosing the "Save as" option.
Are there limits on downloading original video files?
Currently there are no limits on members downloading their original uploaded media file. However, we encourage members to limit the use of this facility as it consumes considerable amounts of bandwidth. This caution is not related to the streaming of media you watch or listen to in the Ziimeo player.
Do I need permission to use media on Ziimeo?
Yes, it's always a good idea to contact the media owner if you want to use their media. Our members retain the copyright of their media and they control the use of that media.
Someone is using my media I uploaded to Ziimeo without my permission. What can I do?

Can I edit my media once they are uploaded?
Unfortunately, Ziimeo doesn’t provide an ‘edit’ facility. Please ‘edit’ your media before uploading them to Ziimeo.
Why is my media stuttering?
Stuttering media can be very annoying, and there are many possible reasons why you may be experiencing poor media playback. For media to play properly, Ziimeo requires a better than average internet connection and a faster computer processor. So, if you have a slow internet connection or your computer is older than 5 years then you may experience some issues. If that does not apply, then here are a few things you can try:
1) Make sure you have the latest version of Flash running on your computer.
2) Turn off any other programs, virus protection, ad blocks, or energy saving settings as they may interfere with media playback.
3) Closing other browsers that you may have open.
4) Try another browser and see if that helps.
Important! In general, videos with fast camera pans, quick zooms in and out, fast moving subjects (think car races) or sudden changes in light conditions do not compress well, so these may be difficult to playback at anytime.
What is the maximum media file size and length?
Your media can be as long as you like, however you are limited by your file size. If you have a Standard SD membership, you are limited to 3 GB per week. However, if you upgrade to HD Active, you get 9 GB of upload space per week, with a limit of 9 GB per file.
Can I make mobile versions of my media?
Unfortunately, Ziimeo doesn’t provide a facility to make mobile versions of your media. However, the good news is that we are working on it. So check this space soon!
Does Ziimeo support closed captioning?
Unfortunately, Ziimeo does not currently support the use of separate closed captioning text files. If you want text to appear in your video, including closed captioning, you need to add it to the actual video like any other graphics, before you upload it to Ziimeo.
Can I customize my video link?
Yes, login to your account and go to ‘Account Management’ click on ‘My Media’ and up will come a window showing all the media you have uploaded in order of upload. Find the media you wish to ‘Edit’ and click. You can change the ‘Title’, ‘Tags’, ‘Category’ and ‘Description’ from this setting. In the ‘description’ setting you can place a custom URL.

What is a 'like'?
As you know by now Ziimeo conducts many competitions, well in conjunction with the star rating on each media we use that rating as 'like'. A ‘like’ is a vote for that media item. When we run our competitions the more ‘likes’ a media item gets the more votes it has from the community members.
How do I like a media item?
To ‘like’ a media item, click a ‘star’ on our 5 star rating below each media. The stars for that media will then change to a brighter yellow. You have now liked the media item and cast a vote for it.
How do I unlike a media item?
Once you ‘like’ a media item you cannot ‘unlike’ it. So be very careful with the rating you give a media item!
Can I 'like' my own media?
Yes, you can ‘like’ your own media, but just like all other members you can only ‘rate’ your media once! Our 5 star rating system has been configured to allow only one ‘rating’ on each media item per IP address.

For example, if you tag your Bali vacation video with the words 'Bali' and 'vacation', you'll be able to easily find other related videos (and other media) and it makes it easier for other Ziimeo members to find your media too!
Is there a limit on the number of tags I can add to my media?
No, you are not limited to a set number of tags on your media. However, we encourage you to add only relevant tags as too many tags can make your media harder to find.
Why should I tag my media?
Tagging your media makes it easier for other Ziimeo users to find your media in our search engine and on the tags page. This way, members can find your media that is of interest to them easily.
I've tagged my media, why aren't they appearing in searches?
If you have just recently uploaded a new video, or just recently made it public, it may take a little while to show up in our search results. If your media does not appear in the search results after a day, try adding more relevant terms to the description or title of your media that should help.

Remember, adding friends can be a way to bookmark the people you like on Ziimeo, as well as keep up to date on the media they upload and the media they like. Adding thousands of friends does not mean that those members will see your media, it just means you will see theirs! Also, adding over 1000 friends can often lead to slow loading times on your homepage and subscription pages because Ziimeo has to load all of your friends' data too!
